Here is an interesting observation about marketing.
You really cannot please everybody. More than that, the more you do in marketing, the more people are going to get upset at you. And yet, the more sales you are going to make.
So what do you do about it?
Do you worry about every person who is going to react negatively and accuse you of “trying to sell them” something? (HELLO!!! You ARE trying to sell them something.) Or do you keep marketing and generating profit?
It amazes me how many people say that they are in business for themselves and they are selling products or services, and yet, they are so negative about somebody marketing to them. How are THEY planning to sell their stuff? Probably the way that most people do: put up a site or a store front and sit there and wait for someone to stumble on it. Then, as the famous statistic goes, 85% of them will be out of business in the first year.
So let’s dumb this down for a second.
- You are in business to make money!
- To make money, you have to get someone to pay you money.
- They usually pay you money for a product or a service.
- For them to hand over their hard (or easy) earned cash, they have to know about your offer and be convinced to act.
- To accomplish this goal, you HAVE TO MARKET – (YES! You have to try to “sell them something”)
That is how the world operates.
Additionally, you have to be better at marketing than the “next guy” selling a competing item. So you HAVE to get out of the box, you HAVE to use innovative and creative marketing methods, you HAVE to stir people up to act…. But only if you want to make money.
So next time, when you have a successful campaign and you make quite a few sales and then start receiving emails or phone calls from people whining that you are “trying to sell them something,” politely thank them for their call, and DO MORE OF WHAT YOU DID! (Obviously, within reason – I would never advocate purposefully being offensive – which would not result in success, anyway).
If it worked and generated you good profit, don’t worry about the negative people. You can ALWAYS find people who are going to be negative. It’s a lot more difficult to find a marketing strategy that works. Once you do, use it!
